Unique Characteristics of Preform Molds: Precision, Efficiency, and Cooling

Compared to standard injection molds, preform molds possess distinct design and manufacturing characteristics, all centered around three core pillars: ultra-high efficiency, superior cooling performance, and precision in the neck finish.

Multi-Cavity Layouts for Maximum Efficiency
Due to the small size and simple geometry of preforms, molds typically feature a high number of cavities-ranging from 48, 72, 96, and 144 to even more. This allows for the production of dozens or hundreds of preforms in a single injection cycle, drastically reducing the cost per unit.
Multi-cavity layouts require precise runner analysis to ensure balanced melt flow from the injection machine nozzle to each cavity, guaranteeing consistency in the dimensions and weight of all preforms.

Hot Runner Systems: An Indispensable Core Component
With such high cavity counts, traditional cold runner systems would generate excessive waste, making them highly uneconomical. Consequently, preform molds exclusively utilize hot runner systems.
Functioning like a sophisticated distributor, the hot runner system maintains the plastic in a molten state throughout, eliminating waste generation. It comprises a main nozzle, a hot runner manifold, and multiple valve pins or hot tips, precisely distributing the melt to each cavity.

Demanding Standards for Cooling Efficiency
Preform production cycles are extremely short (often just over ten seconds or less), with cooling accounting for over 80% of that time. Therefore, the design of the cooling system is the heart of the preform mold.
The mold features a dense, highly efficient network of cooling channels that closely envelop each cavity and core, extracting heat at maximum speed. High cooling efficiency directly translates to higher production output.
In recent years, conformal cooling technology-utilizing 3D printing to create curved cooling channels that follow the product's contours-has been applied to the cores of high-end preform molds. This method improves cooling efficiency by over 30% compared to traditional drilled channels, further shortening cycle times.

Precision Molding of Neck Threads
The neck finish is the functional core of the bottle, requiring clearly defined threads, precise dimensions, and a smooth, flawless sealing surface. To achieve this, the neck section of the preform mold typically employs a specialized insert structure. Thread ring: Used to form the external threads and the support ring of the bottle neck; typically made of high-performance stainless steel, offering high hardness and excellent wear resistance.
Core pin: Used to form the inner wall and sealing surface of the bottle neck. It requires extremely high machining precision and surface finish, typically necessitating a mirror-like polish.

Valve pin control (optional):
For preforms with high-quality requirements (such as those for carbonated soft drink bottles, where preventing base eccentricity is crucial), a valve gate system is employed. Precise control of each valve pin's opening and closing via a pneumatic cylinder
enables sequential injection, ensuring the plastic melt reaches the ends of all cavities simultaneously; this guarantees uniform preform wall thickness and consistent stress distribution during the blow molding process.
